The Balance Keeper is a set of relief prints I created in autumn of 2020. My concept and process for this project were inspired by a saprotrophic fungus called Stereum ostrea, also known as false turkey-tail and golden curtain crust.

In the late summer and early fall of 2020, I began investigating mushrooms as a papermaking medium. I have long been interested in the material uses of fungi, and had come across the work of a few paper makers online who incorporate mushrooms into their practice. These artists have derived the term “mycopaper” from the root word myco, which means “fungi”. Referencing their work as a guide, I started my own series of mushroom paper experiments.
Continue readingI recently had the pleasure of digitally designing a broadside poster to promote Press Here: Atlanta Printmakers’ Process 2020, which is an exhibition showing in the Dalton Gallery at Agnes Scott College. Press Here centers artists’ responses to the events of 2020, in particular the personal and cultural effects of the pandemic, as well as the collective revolt against police brutality and the oppression of folks who are BIPoC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) in this country and across the world. In my Digital Art Processes class, we were given the assignment to make a set of postage stamp designs centering around a particular theme or idea. Because of my interests in ecology and pedagogy, I decided to create a conceptual interactive project that would involve the exchange of knowledge and resources between theoretical participants and the natural environment. I created the stamps below to demonstrate what these theoretical participant-made stamps could look like.
Sage grouse and their relatives are threatened species native to North America which depend upon sagebrush for their main source of food and nesting shelter. Their numbers are declining due to habitat destruction.
